With this blog, Trisha Martinez, new member of the Manitos team, reflects upon her familial experience of Manito migration from northern New Mexico to Wyoming. In the 1930s, members of her family pursued labor opportunities out of state, to work as sheepherders, in the sugar beet fields, and on the railroad. She explains how this has influenced her own querencia, or sense of belonging, in two places. Her passion for community and culture extend into her academic work and now career, as she is blessed to honor and serve the Legacy of Los Manitos. She shares her family’s migration story in the hopes that it will inspire you to share yours.

The Church of San José de Gracia is one of the finest surviving 18th century churches in New Mexico. The Spanish sign reads: La poblaciōn de Las Trampas fun establecida en al año de 1751 con doce families de la Villa de Santa Fe, conducidas for Juan de Arguello. Los pobladores recivieron una merced para este lugar del Gobernador Tomás Velez Capuchin. La iglesia de San José de Gracia, que fue construida en el siglo diez y ocho, es una de las las finas que se hallan en Nuevo México.

My interest about my family history began as a young child during our annual visits to my grandfather Jose Tiburcio Argüello and Antonia (Tonita) Cordova Argüello’s farm in Llano de San Juan Nepomuceno, now known as Llano, New Mexico.
