Narrating Death
The word obituary signals a final reflection and departure of the dead and comes from the Medieval Latin obituarius, “a record of the death.” Contemporary obituaries are thus literary testaments, narrating as much about death as they do the life now passed. The recovery of Manito obituaries therefore reveals an important genre of writing and an important part of what is core to the memory project.
The periodistas, the Spanish language journalists of New Mexico recognized the importance of publishing these ‘records of death’ for others to read and remember. The value was primarily for those left behind and for those of us recognizing this legacy.
In a previous post, Nombrando la Muerte, we documented a listing of names of victims of the 1918 Spanish Flu from Taos County. Each of those individuals has a story that is worth remembering, whether they were infants just beginning their life or elders who had lived an entire life and left behind grieving spouses, parents and children.
Recovering those stories is part of the challenge and opportunity before us. While it seems that not all of these individuals were given an obituary, La Revista de Taos did publish some obituaries as they were received. =

Don Juan de Dios Chaves, de Cerro fue hallado muerto, victima tambien de la epidemia, en el Cerro del Chiflo, mientras venia a pie de un campo ganadero del vecino estado.
Don Juan de Dios Chaves, from Cerro, was found dead, also a victim of the epidemic, in Cerro del Chiflo, while he was walking from a cattle field in the neighboring state.
Liberio Mondragón
En Ranchos de Taos falleció el sábado antepasado Don Liberio Mondragón. Contaba 26 años de edad y deja sumidos en dolor a su esposa, a sus padres y a una niña de dos años de edad.
Last Saturday, in Ranchos de Taos Don Liberio Mondragón passed away. He was 26 years old and leaves his wife, parents and a two-year-old girl in pain.

Doña Candelaria López, esposa de Don Abran Ledoux, de esta de Taos, falleció en el Hospital la semana pasada. Contaba 32 años de edad y deja a su esposo y dos hijos.

Julianita T. Vigil
Mientras se hallaba de visita a su señora madre, política Doña María Estefanita M. Vigil en Ranchos falleció de influenza la Sr. Ma. Julianita T. Vigil, esposa de José M. Vigil, residentes de Tercio, Co. Era hija de Don Agapito Trujillo y Natividad B. de Trujillo de Tercio. Contaba 32 años de edad y deja para sentir su muerte a su esposo, a sus padres y dos hijas de corta edad.
While visiting her mother-in-law, Doña María Estefanita M. Vigil in Ranchos, Ma. Julianita T. Vigil, died of influenza. She was the daughter of Don Agapito Trujillo and Natividad B. de Trujillo and the spouse of José M. Vigil, all residents of Tercio, Colorado. She was 32 years old and left her husband, her parents and two young daughters to grieve for her death.

In the list of casualties that was published yesterday we read that the Taoseño, soldier Abraham Martínez, from Ranchos de Taos, died of influenza in France.
F.E. Quintero
Nuestro Agente de Agricultura. Otro oficial de condado que falleció en la quincena dolorosa fue el Sr. Quintero, nuestro agente de agricultura. Primeramente, cayo postrado en el lecho del dolor la señora su esposa e hijo y a los días cayo postrado el. Su hijo de tres años de edad fue el primero que falleció y a los tres días sucumbió el Sr. Quintero. Su esposa se halla ya muy aliviada y recuperando de la terrible enfermedad y del terrible golpe al ver de aparecer a sus dos únicos seres queridos; el esposo y el único hijo que tanto adoraban.
Our Agriculture Agent. Another county officer who passed away in the painful fortnight was Mr. Quintero, our agricultural agent. First of all, his wife and son fell prostrate on the bed of pain and a few days later he fell prostrate. Her three-year-old son was the first to die and within three days Mr. Quintero succumbed. His wife is recovering from the terrible illness though she has had to endure the terrible blow when she saw her only two loved ones fall; the husband and the only son whom they adored so much.

In Arroyo Hondo, Eugenio Rael passed away on Thursday, Nov. 14. He was the son of the Hon. Juan C. Rael and Rumaldita S. Rael. He leaves behind his young wife Eulogia Santistevan, his parents already mentioned two brothers and three sisters. He was 27 years old.

También falleció en Talpa Don Ricardo Mondragón. Contaba 33 años de edad y deja a su esposa Antonia Lucero, dos niños y a sus padres Don Trinidad Mondragón y esposa. Ambos sucumbieron de la influenza.
Don Ricardo Mondragón died in Talpa. He was 33 years old and leaves his wife Antonia Lucero, two children and his parents, Don Trinidad Mondragón and wife. They both succumbed to the flu.
